316(UNS S31600) and 316L (UNS S31603) is a type of chromium-nickelmolybdenum stainless steels, belongs to 300 series austenitic family.316L stainless steel, also known as marine grade stainless steel, is a low-carbon variant of 316 stainless steel and is primarily used to improve corrosion resistance.

Due to the low carbon content of 316L, it has better corrosion resistance, especially when welding. The low carbon content helps reduce the formation of carbides during the welding process, thereby improving the material's corrosion resistance. It also contains chromium, nickel, and molybdenum, which work together to improve the 316L material ability to withstand corrosion in moderately aggressive environments.
