316 is an austenitic stainless steel alloy,contains chromium, nickel, and molybdenum, which provide excellent corrosion resistance.Generally, 316 steel contains 16-18% chromium, 10-14% nickel, and 2-3% molybdenum. The addition of molybdenum further enhances its resistance to pitting and crevice corrosion.
316 stainless steel have excellent corrosion resistance properties to various corrosive environments, including acidic and alkaline solutions, as well as high chloride environments. The chromium content in 316 stainless steel forms a passive oxide layer on the surface that protects it from further corrosion.
Compared to 304 stainless steel, the addition of molybdenum in 316 makes it stronger and more resistant to a range of acids and bases.Grade 316 stainless is commonly used in the chemical and marine industries due to this increased resistance to chemical attack. It is also often preferred in medical applications as it is non-reactive and easy to clean.
