What is 316 Stainless Steel
Stainless steel is a steel alloy that contains at least 10% chromium, making it corrosion resistant. The addition of chromium to stainless steel will form a metal oxide film on the metal surface to protect it from corrosive substances.
A popular grade of stainless steel is 316 stainless steel, also known as 1.44.0, generally composed of 16 to 18% chromium, 10 to 14% nickel, 2 to 3% molybdenum, and a small percentage of carbon. The addition of molybdenum to 316 stainless steel improves its corrosion resistance compared to other grades of stainless steel. The addition of other alloys further enhances its properties.

316 stainless steel is a stainless steel material with excellent corrosion resistance and is widely used in many fields. Grade 316 stainless steel has excellent corrosion resistance and can be used stably for a long time in a variety of acidic and alkaline environments. 316 stainless also has high strength and toughness, and is very suitable for manufacturing high-demand machine parts, chemical equipment, etc.
SS 316 Stainless Steel Features
- Corrosion resistance: 316 stainless steel has excellent corrosion resistance, especially in chloride environments, such as sea water, salt water, etc., its corrosion resistance is significantly better than other stainless steels. 316 stainless steel is often used in marine environments and chemical equipment. It is usually regarded as "marine grade" stainless steel but is not resistant to warm sea water. Warm chloride environments can cause pitting and crevice corrosion. Grade 316 is also subject to stress corrosion cracking above around 60°C.
- High temperature resistance: 316 ss has good high temperature resistance and can be used at higher temperatures for a long time without losing its corrosion resistance. It is suitable for pipes, containers, etc. under high temperature conditions.
- Mechanical properties: 316 steel has high strength and plasticity, good processing properties, and can be formed through cold working and hot working.

- Oxidation resistance: SS 316 stainless steel has good antioxidant properties, is not easy to rust and fade, has a smooth surface, and is easy to clean and maintain.
-
Heat Resistance:Stainless steel 316 has good resistance to oxidation in intermittent service to 870°C and in continuous service to 925°C. However, continuous use at 425-860°C is not recommended if corrosion resistance in water is required. In this instance 316L is recommended due to its resistance to carbide precipitation.Where high strength is required at temperatures above 500°C, grade 316H is recommended.
