316 stainless steel is a commonly used stainless steel material, also known as 1.4401 stainless steel. Corrosion resistance:316 stainless steel has excellent corrosion resistance, especially in chloride environments, such as sea water, salt water, etc., its corrosion resistance is significantly better than other grades stainless steel.It is usually regarded as "marine grade" stainless steel but is not resistant to warm sea water. Warm chloride environments can cause pitting and crevice corrosion. Grade 316 steel is also subject to stress corrosion cracking above around 60°C.
Although 316 stainless steel has high corrosion resistance, it does not mean that it is completely rust-proof. It is mainly due to add a certain proportion of alloy elements such as chromium, nickel and molybdenum to 316 ss steel,can form a dense oxide film, called a "passivation film", which can effectively resist corrosion from most chemical media,including oxidizing acids, alkalis, salts, etc., to offer better corrosion resistance.
It should be noted that 316 stainless steel has good corrosion resistance in most cases. But in extreme environments, such as long-term exposure to high-concentration salt water, acid gas, high temperature, high humidity and other harsh conditions, it may still occur rust.In addition, if the surface of 316 stainless steel is mechanically damaged, scratched, contaminated, etc., it may also cause corrosion.
