ASTM A240 Type 304 Material Properties

ASTM A240 is a standard developed by the American Society for Testing and Materials (ASTM) for used in the manufacture of stainless steel sheet, strip and foil. ASTM A240 specification covers stainless steel plates, sheets and strips for pressure vessels and general applications. This specification covers chemical composition and mechanical properties for various grades of ferritic, austenitic, martensitic, duplex, super duplex and high moly stainless steel alloys.

 

What is 304 Stainless Steel?

ASTM A240 Type 304 is the most popular and versatile austenitic stainless steel grade, also a standard "18-8" stainless steel,which contains 18% chromium and 8% nickel,with excellent corrosion resistance, formability, deep drawability and weldability.304 Stainless steel is one of the most versatile stainless steel materials.

 

304 stainless steel is the most widely used chromium-nickel stainless steel,has good corrosion resistance, heat resistance, low temperature strength and mechanical properties; it has good hot processing properties such as stamping and bending, and no heat treatment hardening phenomenon (using temperature -196℃~800℃). It is suitable for food processing, storage and transportation. It has good processing performance and weldability.

 

Grade 304L is the lower carbon version of 304,with excellent intergranular corrosion resistance. So, 304L can be extensively used in welded condition and does not require post weld heat treatment. 304H is the high carbon variant of 304 grade with higher strength above 450°C.

304LN is a nitrogenstrengthened variant of 304L. By means of solid solution strengthening, nitrogen provides significantly higher yield and tensile strength than 304L without adversely affecting ductility, corrosion resistance or non-magnetic properties.
