Electro-galvanized steel is a type of steel that has a layer of zinc deposited on the surface of the steel through an electrolytic process.This zinc layer provides a protection against oxidation and corrosion.The process involves electroplating, running a current of electricity through a saline/zinc solution with a zinc anode and steel conductor.
The process of electro-galvanizing is to immerse the steel in an electrolyte containing zinc salts and pass an electric current to deposit zinc ions on the surface to form a zinc layer. This process can accurately control the thickness of the zinc layer, and generally the thickness of the zinc layer on each side does not exceed 0.36 mils (about 9.1 microns)
Compared to hot dip galvanizing, electroplated galvanized steel has advantages as follows:
- Lower thickness deposits to achieve comparable performance
- Broader conversion coating availability for increased performance and colour options
- Brighter, more aesthetically appealing, deposits
Electro galvanized steel (EGI) creates a durable product with anti-fingerprints and scratches. It has good corrosion resistance, processability, weldability, and paintability.
