Description

Material 316L is a type of austenitic stainless steel that has been specially developed to provide enhanced corrosion resistance compared to Grade 304L. It contains chromium, nickel, and molybdenum, which work together to improve the 316L material ability to withstand corrosion in moderately aggressive environments.

Molybdenum is a particularly important element in 316L steel, as it improves the material's resistance to chloride pitting and general corrosion,which makes it a popular choice in applications where the material will come into contact with saltwater or other corrosive substances.

It is common practice for 316L to be dual certified as 316 and 316L. The low carbon chemistry of 316L SS combined with an addition of nitrogen enables 316L to meet the mechanical properties of 316.An additional addition of nitrogen further improves its mechanical properties and ensures that it meets industry standards for strength and durability.
