Grade 409 is a stabilized heat resisting ferritic stainless steel with good mechanical properties and high temperature corrosion resistance,providing good oxidation and corrosion resistance compared to carbon steel.409 stainless steel contains 11% chromium, which is the minimum amount to form a passive surface film that makes stainless steel corrosion resistant. It has good high temperature corrosion resistance, moderate strength, and good formability.
Stainless Steel 409 is especially useful for applications requiring oxidation or corrosion protection beyond the capability of carbon steel and some coated steels. 409 has good oxidation resistance and formability, but lower corrosion resistance due to the chromium content.
Corrosion resistance
Grade 409 stainless steel has excellent resistance to exhaust gas and atmospheric corrosion, superior to 410 martensitic grade stainless steel with a chromium content of 12% and 3CR12. However, its corrosion resistance is lower than that of grade 430 steel with 17% chromium. The surface of grade 409 steel is susceptible to mild corrosion, which limits the use of the steel for decorative purposes.
Heat Resistance
Grade 409 stainless steel can withstand temperatures up to 675°C during continuous operation and up to 815°C under intermittent conditions for scaling resistance.
Heat Treatment
Grade 409 steel is annealed in the temperature range of 790 to 900°C and then air cooled.In the annealed condition 409 does not harden
