316L is molybdenum-bearing austenitic stainless steel,with 2-3% molybdenum content,which improves the 316L alloys corrosion resistance to pitting and crevice corrosion in chloride environments.The 'L' indicates 316L Stainless Steel is a low carbon version of Grade 316,which minimizes carbide precipitation due to welding,thereby avoids the problem of intergranular corrosion.
316L stainless steel has good creep and stress rupture properties under high temperatures, making it suitable for high temperature environments,as well as outstanding formability and weldability. 316L is the lower carbon version of 316 and is immune from sensitization; therefore, it is very frequently used in heavy gauge welded components.
