What is the difference between 304L and 304 Stainless Steel

304L stainless steel and 304 stainless steel are two common type stainless steel materials.The main difference between 304L and 304 steel is the carbon content.

 

304L stainless steel is a lower-carbon version of 304, which means it has better corrosion resistance and can be welded without the risk of sensitization (a condition where the material becomes susceptible to corrosion). 304 Stainless Steel:

-Grade 304 stainless steel is a versatile and widely used stainless steel alloy.

-It contains a higher amount of chromium (18%) and nickel (8%) compared to many other stainless steel alloys.

-The carbon content is typically around 0.08%.

-Intergranular corrosion is prone to occur at high temperatures, that is, the area after welding is prone to corrosion.
-Suitable for most general purpose stainless steel applications, although care may be required to prevent intergranular corrosion when welding.

 

304L Stainless Steel:

-Grade 304L is a low-carbon variant of 304 stainless steel, with an extra-low carbon content.

-It is specifically developed to minimize the carbide precipitation during welding, which can lead to corrosion in certain environments.

-The carbon content in 304L is typically limited to 0.03%.

-304L Stainless Steel has better resistance to intergranular corrosion and is especially suitable for welding applications.
-More stable in high temperatures and corrosive environments, reducing the risk of intergranular corrosion.
-Commonly used in applications requiring welding, such as manufacturing chemical equipment, food industry equipment, etc.
