Chromium is the basic element that makes 316 steel resistant to corrosion,chromium reacts with oxygen in corrosive media, forming a very thin oxide film (self-passivation film) on the steel surface, which can prevent further corrosion of the steel matrix.

The addition of molybdenum also enhances the strength and hardness of 316 stainless, making it ideal for use in harsh conditions.The addition of molybdenum also enhances general corrosion resistance and chloride pitting. In an upraised temperature it also provides high creep, stress-to-rupture, and tensile strength.
