304 stainless steel is a commonly used austenitic alloy containing 18% chromium and 8% nickel. Chromium forms a passivating oxide layer on the surface of steel,also known as chromium oxide. The oxide layer forms a barrier on the surface of the steel to prevent further oxidation and corrosion of the steel, providing corrosion resistance to 304 stainless steel,suitable for harsh environments, such as marine applications and chemical processing plants.
In addition to the excellent corrosion resistance,304 stainless steel also has good resistance to high temperatures, making it suitable for applications where exposure to elevated temperatures is a concern.
