Marine grade stainless steel refers to stainless steel used in marine areas that requires particularly strong corrosion resistance,is a component that provides enhanced resistance to reductive media that is common in marine systems. Marine Stainless Steel Tubing can resist intergranular corrosion and prevent pitting by acids,exhibit excellent strength and also doesn't easily dissociate under any pressures or temperatures that are common in marine environments.
Common marine grade stainless steels include austenitic stainless steel UNS S30400 and UNS S31600, which have superior ductility, high strength, non-magnetic properties, good welding performance and excellent corrosion resistance. The corrosion resistance of stainless steel 304/316 mainly depends on the formation of a highly corrosion-resistant chromium oxide film on the surface.
The addition of about 18% chromium in Grade 304/316 to form a chromium oxide film.And extra 2% molybdenum is also added to 316 stainless steel to further improve corrosion resistance. It can meet 90% of marine applications.
Grade 304 is the most used standard grade has good corrosion resistance and good machinability.
316 has much better corrosion resistance than Grade 304 and is the grade recommended for marine environments or coastal applications,also known as "marine grade".
