316 stainless steel generally contains 16-18% chromium, 10-14% nickel, and 2-3% molybdenum,which provide excellent corrosion resistance.316 steel also can be referred to a chromium-nickel molybdenum austenitic stainless steel alloy,the addition of molybdenum further enhances its resistance to pitting and crevice corrosion.The chromium content in 316 stainless steel also forms a passive oxide layer on the surface that protects it from further corrosion.
Compared to 304 stainless steel, the addition of molybdenum in 316 makes it stronger and more resistant to a range of acids and bases.Grade 316 stainless is commonly used in the chemical and marine industries due to this increased resistance to chemical attack. It is also often preferred in medical applications as it is non-reactive and easy to clean.
